Happy (early) Nevada Day!
While the last minute touches on costumes are being done, the candy ready at the door, and apple cider mulling it gives one time to reflect on why Nevada celebrates this wonderful day. The candy and day off of work or school is an added plus, but the importance of why Nevada became a state in 1864 is the real reason for celebration. The Nevada Art Museum's exhibit on Nevada's road to statehood highlights the battleborn triumph and worth the trip downtown. Both Nevada's constitution and the emancipation proclamation are available for viewing this weekend!
There are many other fun filled Nevada Day activities this weekend, along with a few Halloween events. So, don't forget to have fun and floss your teeth after eating candy!

Having fun with our dental family
We are very fortunate to have excellent team members at our second home, Brosy Family Dentistry. Most of these folks have been with us many years, and they truly are our extended family. We enjoy getting together outside of the office walls. Dr. Anderson hosted our latest gathering. Here are a few photos.

Halloween Candy Buy Back
As a dentist, I have a love/hate relationship with candy. Personally, I'm inclined to think of chocolate as an important food group and could easily dine on Reese's peanut butter cups and a glass of red wine. I also brush my teeth very well after this indulgence, something my lollipop and gummy bear eating young patients don't always do so well.
Is Halloween candy fun? You bet. But does anyone really need ten pounds (or even 1 or 2 pounds) of sugar? It's not good for our overall health and weight, and certainly can cause painful cavities, which is why I'm a big fan of the Halloween Candy Buy Back program, promoted by Operation Gratitude. This will be the third year our office as participated in the buy back. The idea is simple- the week after Halloween, we encourage children (and their parents!) to bring in some of their extra confections. We give the kids a dollar a pound for their donations. The candy is packed up and sent to Operation Gratitude in southern California. They in turn send the candy to our overseas military troops.
We're partnering with Pitts orthodontics and are especially grateful to ITS Logistics Reno who have kindly shipped the hundreds of pounds of candy our offices gather.

Working with a great staff – including my parents!
These past two months have been a whirlwind at Brosy Family
Dentistry. I could not feel more fortunate to join an amazing staff and be part
of what I believe is the best practice for patient care. Working with my
parents, Dr. Lynn & Dr. Paul, has become a wonderful learning experience
that makes me excited to come to work every day.
My husband and I are settling into both of our jobs, and our
dog Rudy is quite excited to no longer deal with the Las Vegas heat. We’ve been
able to enjoy Reno activities, ranging from artown festivals, walking along the
river, and becoming champions at trivia (in large help to Dr. Paul’s golf knowledge).
I’m sure these next months and upcoming years will be a
great time at our office and I look forward to meeting all of our incredible
patients!

Here we are with our hygienists at a recent two day continuing education
class about dental lasers.

Do you have bad breath?
Haven't we all been in a situation where we wished our breath were fresher? Here are some natural remedies to help prevent the dreaded halitosis. This link is from Sheri, one of our really wonderful dental hygienists. How to naturally combat bad breath

Adding a new doctor to the staff!
Dr. Paul and I could not be prouder. Our daughter, Dr. Erin Anderson, DMD, is officially joining our staff tomorrow. Learning from Erin will be invigorating, and teaching her will be rewarding. We are so blessed!

Creepy but fascinating
Sheri, one of our dental hygienists always seems to be researching something. Here's an article she found about skeletal development and teeth. Interesting, but indeed, a bit creepy.

Do you have the dreaded Gum Disease or Gingivitis?
Periodontal,
or gum disease, can be a very sneaky condition for our patients- often
no pain or acute symptoms. One day your gums are seemingly healthy, and
at your next check up, we find evidence of disease. Here's an
interesting look at how future diagnoses might be made. Quick detection of periodontal disease

Redheads really aren't crazy!
Are you a redhead? Do your palms sweat with the thought of a visit to the dentist? You actually might have good reason to be a bit nervous. Those natural redheads may really require more anesthetic. Take a look at this article from the New York Times, The Pain of being a Redhead or this one from "How Stuff Works," Redheads and anesthesia.

Graduations Past and Present

Did I say we LOVE babies?!
Congratulations to Jill, one of our fantastic dental hygienists and her family as they welcome baby boy Jameson Jett. We're so excited and happy for them.
2014 Sabbatical
After four years of college and four more in dental school, I am done with first day of school, midterm exams, and final papers. While I know my educational path will continue to evolve and expand I am very excited to be done with school. Graduation is not until May, and I won't have my license until July. Therefore the only logical thing to do with these two months is to take a sabbatical. I looked up sabbatical in Wikipedia and the web geniuses say it can last from two months to two years. I feel like my time frame just squeaked into the correct definition. A lot of people have asked me what I'm going to do with this newly found free time and many great ideas have involved a blog. While I can't guarantee that I'll write daily I will try to blog more about the adventures throughout this very exciting time in my life. I may also have to try one of these ideas: http://yoursabbatical.com/getting-started/100-things/
Or at least try to go see blue man group if they don't let me work backstage...

Compassion Community Clinic
Dr. Paul and I have been given so many blessings in our lives, and firmly believe that those who are richly blessed should try to return those gifts to those around them. We've recently been involved with Compassion Community Clinic, a free dental clinic in Reno/Sparks, serving helping under served adults. Dr. Paul is the acting Dental Director.
Take a look at their website http://nvccclinic.org/

We love babies!
Our office enjoys spending time with each other outside of patient treatment and care. We love celebrating our birthdays and special occasions.
Jill, one of our great hygienists is expecting her 3rd baby in several weeks, and we celebrated with a small office baby shower. We made a great ABC book, had fabulous food, played a fun game, and watched Jill open some special gifts. We love you Jill!

I'll have a soda...no, make that a water, please.
Cans of pepsi, seven-up, or root-beer have never been prevalent in the Brosy household. All that sugar and carbonation aren't very good for your teeth, or for the rest of your body. Take a look at this article about the hidden costs of drinking that can of soda.

Singing Valentines
We were fortunate to have a quartet from the Reno Silver Dollar Chorus come by our office on Valentine's Day to share their beautiful voices. Thank you!

Brosy Tooth Doctors Laboratory
Our office enjoyed a great afternoon hosting the Brosy Tooth Doctors Laboratory for several youngsters. The afternoon helps transform how kids
learn about tooth decay, sugar, and the field of dentistry. “Brosy 2th
Drs. Laboratory” takes children out of the dental chair and places them in a
fun filled science project with hands on experiments.
Kids love to learn by participation when given the chance. We thought it would be really fun for our young patients and our staff to take a new approach to educating about how to brush your teeth, what foods do to your teeth, and what it’s like to work in a dental office. We’ve set up our science laboratory in our dental office so children can really explore and learn, without worrying about having a cavity filled that day.
The 2th Drs Laboratory is free of charge,
however limited space is available. Please call 775-826-1988 for
reservations. Special arrangements for groups such as Boy or Girl Scout
Troops may be made.

More on snoring via the Reno Gazette Journal
One of our great hygienists, Sheri, brought this article to our attention. How snoring and sleep problems can cause heart conditions. A good night's sleep is so important to your overall health. Do you snore? We can possibly help you with a dental appliance.

Groundhogs, St. Valentines, George Washington and kid's teeth
February seems full of commemorative days, beginning with groundhog Punxsutawney Phil sounding an alarm for an early spring or continued winter. Romantic Valentine's Day promises roses, chocolates and candlelit dinners.
President's Day gives us a three day weekend, and reminds us of our great leaders George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. As dentists, we love the stories of President Washington's ivory teeth (read more about them here http://www.mountvernon.org/georgewashington/teeth). I don't know anything about Lincoln's teeth, but we never see him smile, do we?
There are a few health related days associated with February. World Cancer Day is February 4th. http://www.worldcancerday.org/.You may have noticed Facebook profile pictures changed to a purple hue to raise awareness for cancer. February 7 is National Wear Red Day to promote awareness about women's heart health.
The entire month of February is Children's Dental Health Month. We love children at Brosy Family Dentistry and do our best to encourage good habits of nutrition and oral care with our young patients. Our dental assistants and hygienists spend time outside office hours, visiting elementary schools with our traveling Tooth Doctor Science Laboratory. We donate our professional services to Nevada Check-Up, which helps provide much needed dental care to needy youngsters.
Have a wonderful February!
