So much candy, so many blessings

We were amazed by how generous our young and old patients were with their Halloween candy. Together with Pitts Orthodontics, we collected over 700 pounds of candy to send to our overseas troops. A HUGE shout out of gratitude goes to ITS Logistics for shipping the Reno candy to its sorting point in southern California.
This is Reno wrote a nice article about the candy buy back program, you can read it here http://thisisreno.com/2013/11/pitts-orthodontics-brosy-family-dentistry-collect-halloween-candy-send-troops/

Brosy 2th Drs Laboratory

Our very first 2th Drs Science Laboratory was a great success. We're not sure who had more fun, our staff putting on the event, or our great junior scientists. Here are a few pictures from our afternoon.

But I love my old picture!

When Paul and I were in dental school in Portland, over 30 years ago, there was a downtown dentist who did a lot of print advertising. This was in the stone age, pre-internet, mind you, so we're talking about newspaper ads. I don't recall the name of this dentist, but I still recall his 1950's styled hair, old-style dental smock, and retro eyeglasses, which were not in fashion at the time. We students all clucked and sniffed, and decidedly avowed we would never allow our pictures to grow stale. We'd replace them frequently and stay current. We were also quite young, without gray hair or crow's feet near our eyes, and probably didn't think we'd ever look "mature."

So now we fast forward. Paul and I have our pictures displayed at the office. We look fantastic and fresh sans any wrinkles or aging hair color. The photographs are close to two decades old. Time for new head shots, and time for a reality check. We've definitely grown older, and the stark evidence between the mirror and our youthful pictures is unsettling. My advice? Change those photos more often, and the startling differences between youth and maturity are not so unsettling!

I don't snore! Yet another difference between women and men....

I married my husband, Paul, 31 years ago, unaware of the great Brosy gene for sleeping anywhere, anytime albeit with a soft snore. It's really quite a gift, their ability to snooze away during lectures, theatrical events, or school functions. If Paul is only nodding when he should be awake, I'm not too concerned. However, when his throat makes more noise than the whispering of our neighboring seatmates, I bring out a gentle elbow. He usually denies sleeping, and vehemently refuses to believe he was snoring.

I had never been a snorer until recent years. Middle age brings on unwanted wrinkles, creaky joints, and snuffling noises while sleeping. When my dear spouse nudges me during the night, suggesting my nighttime noises are keeping him awake, I am appalled and apologetic.

My female friends who snore share similar stories. Men do snore, and perhaps more often, but tend to be defensive and argumentative. Women do snore, and perhaps more loudly, but are generally embarrassed by the event.

Male or female, there are treatments available for snoring. Our office uses the SilentNite dental appliance. This affordable device is flexible, thin and comfortable for our patients, and it exhibits documented clinical success in mitigating or even preventing the disruptive, unhealthy effects of snoring and sleep apnea. Please call our office, 775-826-1988, to see if this appliance could help you or your sleeping partner.

Election Results

Great news for the Brosy family as Dr Lynn was elected Secretary of the Nevada Dental Association. I could not be more proud of her and know that she will make an excellent leader.

Slow down and say "Hello." Lessons I learned today.

I breezily walked into the treatment room, where  a patient of many years was waiting for me to treat a lower molar. "How's your lip feeling? Are you numb yet?" I asked cheerfully.  David, a trim gentleman with a delightful British accent, responded, "How are you doing today? I am well, thank you."

I stopped in my tracks. I had, at least momentarily, forgotten the person behind the tooth being treated and left behind the good manners my mother had certainly taught me.

David's gentle "how are you doing?" was a lesson and reminder to me to engage with my patient as an entire person. I learned he was retiring within the next few weeks, and had become a US citizen. He was looking forward to his first 4th of July as an American.

My love for dentistry really does have more to do with the relationships I build with my patients, and less with the science and physics of teeth restoration. Thank you, David!

30th Dental School Reunion!

Dr. Paul and I returned from a trip down memory lane at Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School where we recently celebrated our 30th dental school reunion. We joined fellow classmates from the Class of 1983 for a weekend of fun events, including a Mixer and Waxup contest at the dental school. Here's Dr. Paul with good friend, oral surgeon Dr. Kipp Hammon. More chatting was done than any actual lab work.
On Saturday, we participated in a Caddyshack style Golf tournament, at a 12 hole (yes, you read that correctly) golf course, which really only required pitching wedges and putters to get around. Prizes were awarded for best attire, and although Paul was very snappily dressed, he was beat out by a Bill Murray look-a-like. Dr. Lynn opted for a 70's silk shirt, but the rain kept her covered.
Classmates came from as far away as North Carolina and Washington, D.C. Here we are at the Saturday evening event held at McMennamin's Kennedy School.

Way to go, Erin!

Erin Anderson, our youngest daughter and third year dental student at UNLV School of Dentistry, recently received a great award. Erin is quite the leader- she's the President of her school American Student Dental Association chapter, and was awarded her district "Delegate of the Year." Congrats to you, Erin!

Technology

Not only do I remember the movie “Back to the Future”, but my husband and I will be dressing in our best 1980s gear for a fun 5k run this Saturday. If our yellow lab would put on a Marty McFly jacket we would surely win the race. Technology has transformed my schooling in the past ten years. In college, laptops were rampant throughout the dorms, but rarely brought to class. Now in dental school we are issued the same laptop throughout the entire student body. All of my textbooks are available at the click of a mouse and I can fit multiple encyclopedias in my backpack. Most of our records are kept electronically. This has many advantages, but also various disadvantages. Often in clinic we see many students asking questions, back turned and facing a computer. The patient interaction becomes a necessity and being drawn away from the advancing technology is always needed.
I love a break from the high tech gadgets, but also cannot imagine being in dental school or everyday life without technology!

Back to the Future

Do you remember the movie "Back to the Future" with Christopher Lloyd as the crazy time traveling Doc Brown?  Doc's friend, Marty McFly accidentally is transported back in time from the early 1980's to 1955. With the disturbance of the AT&T internet grid this past Monday evening, I felt as if I had ridden that flux capacitor back to 1980.  I don't mind a planned vacation from computer use; a camping trip without electronic connection is quite nice. This unplanned interuuption was unwelcome and annoying. I take so much for granted about the information superhighway the internet provides me, from finding a quick recipe for dinner, checking my bank statements, to playing a game of "Words with Friends."  And I heavily rely on internet searches in my duties as a dentist- the quick ability to check on potential drug interactions or email colleagues for second opinions is something I would miss greatly.

In my dental school years, I couldn't have imagined the high tech world of the computer and internet. We purchased large, heavy and expensive textbooks and took scrawling notes by hand in class. We relied on medical journals for information, with laborious searches to locate needed articles. Lectures were given with overhead projectors. I'm quite happy to be in 2013!

Driving down the road, part two

The scene is set for a disastarous winter trip- snow, ice, an old sports car, and two young foolish drivers. We were prepared with chains for the little MGB, and never really considered how silly we looked chaining up and then following semi-trucks over the mountain passes, our car bravely straddling the piled snow. As you must surmise, we arrived safely in Las Vegas to spend Christmas vacation. We probably gave little thought to any worries our parents may have shared about this drive.

Almost 30 years later, our daughters are now driving from far distances to visit us. They are good drivers with safe cars, fully equipped with air bags, good tires, and all wheel drive. Cell phones provide easy communication. Do they worry? Probably not too much. Do I fret about their arrival? Absolutely!

Driving down the road, Part 1

Paul is one of five children, and the only one of the Brosy clan who has moved out of Oregon. His family is truly remarkable-they all get along, every last sibling, child and cousin. The Tualatin homestead, a log cabin on the river, remains the gathering point for all holiday get togethers. I joke that Norman Rockwell could be painting our picture at any celebration, but it really is true that this is an ideal group, and I am so lucky to be included.

My birth family is much more complicated and crazy, with the exception of my sweet mother. We yell and fight, and often don't talk to one another for years just because someone forgot to shut a door, or told the wrong joke, or because it happens to be Wednesday. The only artists painting our family portrait would be Dali or Jackson Pollack.

Paul and I marry between our third and fourth years of dental school, and I am surrounded by a fabulous, loving group who wants to celebrate births, birthdays, Easters and St. Patrick's Days all together. This has been something I've always craved. So what do we do our very first married Christmas? When we only have a short semester break? When our only car is a very small, MGB convertible? When it is snowing fiercely over the Santiam Pass and roads are closed all over Northern California and Nevada? Why, drive to Las Vegas, of course, a good 900 miles away, but the home of my dear family.

To be continued...
