I don't snore! Yet another difference between women and men....

I married my husband, Paul, 31 years ago, unaware of the great Brosy gene for sleeping anywhere, anytime albeit with a soft snore. It's really quite a gift, their ability to snooze away during lectures, theatrical events, or school functions. If Paul is only nodding when he should be awake, I'm not too concerned. However, when his throat makes more noise than the whispering of our neighboring seatmates, I bring out a gentle elbow. He usually denies sleeping, and vehemently refuses to believe he was snoring. 

I had never been a snorer until recent years. Middle age brings on unwanted wrinkles, creaky joints, and snuffling noises while sleeping. When my dear spouse nudges me during the night, suggesting my nighttime noises are keeping him awake, I am appalled and apologetic.

My female friends who snore share similar stories. Men do snore, and perhaps more often, but tend to be defensive and argumentative. Women do snore, and perhaps more loudly, but are generally embarrassed by the event.

Election Results

Great news for the Brosy family as Dr Lynn was elected Secretary of the Nevada Dental Association. I could not be more proud of her and know that she will make an excellent leader.

Slow down and say "Hello." Lessons I learned today.

I breezily walked into the treatment room, where  a patient of many years was waiting for me to treat a lower molar. "How's your lip feeling? Are you numb yet?" I asked cheerfully.  David, a trim gentleman with a delightful British accent, responded, "How are you doing today? I am well, thank you."

 

I stopped in my tracks. I had, at least momentarily, forgotten the person behind the tooth being treated and left behind the good manners my mother had certainly taught me.

 

David's gentle "how are you doing?" was a lesson and reminder to me to engage with my patient as an entire person. I learned he was retiring within the next few weeks, and had become a US citizen. He was looking forward to his first 4th of July as an American.

 

My love for dentistry really does have more to do with the relationships I build with my patients, and less with the science and physics of teeth restoration. Thank you, David!

30th Dental School Reunion!

Dr. Paul and I returned from a trip down memory lane at Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School where we recently celebrated our 30th dental school reunion. We joined fellow classmates from the Class of 1983 for a weekend of fun events, including a Mixer and Waxup contest at the dental school. Here's Dr. Paul with good friend, oral surgeon Dr. Kipp Hammon. More chatting was done than any actual lab work.

On Saturday, we participated in a Caddyshack style Golf tournament, at a 12 hole (yes, you read that correctly) golf course, which really only required pitching wedges and putters to get around. Prizes were awarded for best attire, and although Paul was very snappily dressed, he was beat out by a Bill Murray look-a-like. Dr. Lynn opted for a 70's silk shirt, but the rain kept her covered.

Classmates came from as far away as North Carolina and Washington, D.C. Here we are at the Saturday evening event held at McMennamin's Kennedy School. 

 

 



Way to go, Erin!

Erin Anderson, our youngest daughter and third year dental student at UNLV School of Dentistry, recently received a great award. Erin is quite the leader- she's the President of her school American Student Dental Association chapter, and was awarded her district "Delegate of the Year." Congrats to you, Erin!

Technology

Not only do I remember the movie “Back to the Future”, but my husband and I will be dressing in our best 1980s gear for a fun 5k run this Saturday. If our yellow lab would put on a Marty McFly jacket we would surely win the race. Technology has transformed my schooling in the past ten years. In college, laptops were rampant throughout the dorms, but rarely brought to class. Now in dental school we are issued the same laptop throughout the entire student body. All of my textbooks are available at the click of a mouse and I can fit multiple encyclopedias in my backpack. Most of our records are kept electronically. This has many advantages, but also various disadvantages. Often in clinic we see many students asking questions, back turned and facing a computer. The patient interaction becomes a necessity and being drawn away from the advancing technology is always needed.

I love a break from the high tech gadgets, but also cannot imagine being in dental school or everyday life without technology!
